What is Steatite?
Steatite, also known as soapstone, is a metamorphic rock primarily composed of talc, along with micas, chlorite, and amphibole. It forms through the metamorphism of magnesium-rich rocks like peridotite and pyroxenite.
Characteristics
- Soft and smooth texture (due to high talc content)
- Heat-resistant and chemically stable
- Easily carved and shaped
Formation
- Results from the metamorphism of ultramafic rocks under high temperature and pressure
Uses
Construction & Architecture
- Countertops, sinks, and vanities (due to heat resistance and durability)
- Flooring tiles (especially for exterior applications)
- Masonry heaters
Electrical Engineering
- Insulators (high dielectric strength, low electrical conductivity)
- Washers, bushings, and beads (due to mechanical strength)
Other Uses
- Ceramics
- Pigments
